Was Japan’s COVID-19 Response a Success? Preparing for a Second Wave (Dr. Kazuhiro Tateda, Toho Univ. Prof./President of Japan’s Infectious Diseases Assoc. )
post date : 2020.06.15
With the state of emergency declaration to prevent the spread of COVID-19 having been lifted nationwide on May 25, Japanese society has been moving towards restarting a full-scale activity. Japan appears to have made it through the first wave of the pandemic with a significantly lower number of infections and deaths than Western countries. How was Japan able to prevent the spread of infection with a request to stay at home which was not legally binding? Are there other factors besides this behind Japan’s success? And what must be done to prepare for the second wave of the pandemic, which is considered a certainty?
The FPCJ has invited Dr. Kazuhiro Tateda, a professor at Toho University’s Department of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, to hold an online briefing.
Dr. Tateda is also the president of the Japanese Association for Infectious Diseases and a member of expert panels advising the Japanese government on COVID-19 and other infectious diseases.
