Report:February 17-18, 2009【Toyama City Press Tour】

post date : 2013.08.24

With the theme, “Toyama’s winter attraction”, City of Toyama and Toyama Television Broadcasting Corporation co-organized a press tour, inviting a total of 12 journalists resident in Tokyo from such Asian countries/regions as China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Singapore.

Today, Toyama’s tourism including infrastructure, in particular the transportation system, is in a period of transition. The final section of the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway was opened to traffic in July 2008 and the Hokuriku Shinkansen is expected to be launched in 2013.

Toyama City merged with six neighboring towns and villages and became a huge city with a variety of tourism resources. It has formulated the “Tourism Action Plan” and is “working together” with the private sector.

In the midst of the global economic slowdown, the tour featured a few examples of the rebirth of local economies: the Tateyama-sanroku ski resort got out of the red; the JR Toyama-ko Line, which was in red, was revitalized as a next-generation tram system named Toyama Light Rail.

Right after the tour, South Korea’s JoongAng Daily filed a story titled “Toyama to be a city of green economy.”
