Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has described economic security policy as an urgent issue and an important pillar of his “new capitalism.” The Economic Security Promotion Act (ESPA) was approved by Cabinet in late February, with the goal of passing it during the current Diet session. In addition to the continuing opposition between the US and China, heightened geopolitical risks such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have highlighted the importance of economic security, and there is increased activity toward debating the act.
The FPCJ invited Prof. Akira Igata, Executive Director and Visiting Professor at the Center for Rule-making Strategies (CRS) of Tama University, an expert in economic security policy whose comments are often picked up by the media. He will discuss the key points for the Diet debate on the act and its outcome, the impact it will have on the Japanese economy and Japanese businesses, and what issues exist. Prof. Igata is also an Economic Security Advisor to the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) and a Senior Adjunct Fellow at Pacific Forum, a US-based thinktank, as well as providing advice to Japanese politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties, government agencies, and businesses.
The briefing had a total of 35 participants including journalists from Brazil, China, France, Singapore, and UK.
