Video report: Can Decarbonization Be Achieved with the New Basic Energy Plan? (Ms. Yukari Takamura, Professor, The University of Tokyo Institute for Future Initiatives)

post date : 2021.10.27

With the COP26 being held in the UK next month, the world is making moves towards carbon neutrality. Japan has also established an ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 46% in fiscal year 2030 from fiscal year 2013 levels, with a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. In line with this trend, the new Basic Energy Plan proposed this summer had Cabinet approval on October 22.

Under this new Basic Energy Plan, how will Japan work toward becoming a carbon-free society by 2050? What challenges exist, and what initiatives will be necessary to solve them? The FPCJ invited Ms. Yukari Takamura, a professor at The University of Tokyo Institute for Future Initiatives, to speak about this topic. Ms. Takamura is an expert in international and environmental law, and as a member of the Japanese government’s Expert Panel on Climate Change and the Strategic Policy Committee of the Advisory Committee for Natural Resources and Energy, she is a central figure in discussions surrounding energy policy.

The briefing had a total of 19 participants including journalists from China, Germany, Singapore, and the US.
