Database of train platform falls by persons with visual impairment has been published on website

2019.07.30

A database (DB) of train platform falls by persons
with visual impairment has been published on a website,

https://omresearch.jp/fall/browse/

The purpose of this DB is to contribute to the prevention of falls by widely disseminating information regarding cases involving persons with visual impairment falling (or nearly falling) from train platforms in Japan. It is intended for use by interested parties such as rehabilitation workers, railway company employees, public safety officers, private citizens, and persons with visual impairment, and is one of the numerous efforts aimed at promoting increased understanding of the current conditions faced by persons with visual impairment.

Furthermore, many foreign persons with visual impairment will visit Japan in 2020 for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. The DB will help facilitate their safe and reliable train travel in Japan.

The construction and maintenance of this database (DB) are supported by Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and a Private University Research Branding Project provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. Many Japanese orientation and mobility instructors have and are now cooperating with us in collecting related cases.

The DB is administrated by Visiting Researcher Motohiro Ohkura, a professor emeritus at Seikei University. If you have any questions, please contact him by email at ohkura@st.seikei.ac.jp
