[Press Conference for Overseas Media] (Second) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station “Update on Efforts to the Decommissioning and the Discharge of ALPS Treated Water into the Sea”

On Monday, February 13, TEPCO will hold a press conference for overseas media representatives to give an update on the status of the decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and preparations for the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea provided by the Chief Decommissioning Officer and the Chief Officer for ALPS treated water management.

 

In this second press conference (the first was held in October 2022), we will give an update on the decommissioning of Units 1~4 and also explain safety assurance initiatives pertaining to the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea. The information provided shall include explanations of the initiatives to ensure safety and transparency in light of the IAEA review, and the ALPS purification mechanism using an animated video.

Decommissioning details

The decommissioning work at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, being carried out based on the “Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap towards the Decommissioning of TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station,” consists of measures to deal with contaminated water, removal of fuel rod assemblies from spent fuel pools, retrieval of fuel debris, measures to deal with waste materials, and other operations.

Details on the discharge of ALPS treated water into the sea

Considering the Japanese government's basic policy announced in April 2021, TEPCO had been reviewing the details of the design and operation of ALPS treated water dilution/discharge facility and related facilities. On December 21, 2021, TEPCO submitted the "Application Documents for Approval to Amend the Implementation Plan for Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Specified Nuclear Facility" for the basic design of ALPS treated water dilution/discharge facility and related facilities to the Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA), and on July 22, 2022, these application documents were approved by the NRA.
