Since the opening of its port in 1859, Yokohama, as Japan’s gateway to the world, played an essential role in the modernization and internationalization of Japan and greatly contributed to the growth and development of the country. Today it is the second largest city in Japan with a population of 3.68 million and is often ranked high in surveys as a place to live in or visit.

Yokohama celebrated the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Port of Yokohama in 2009 and made a fresh start toward the future. In October 2010 Haneda Airport, which currently handles all the domestic flights to and from Tokyo, is expected toexpand its international role and in November the 2010 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting will be held in Yokohama. This looks to be an eventful year that will let the city attract greater attention in and outside Japan as a global metropolis.

Yokohama has consistently taken the lead in various fields in Japan. It is the city’s characteristic that it introduces something new as swiftly as possible and paves an original way having its eyes wide open to the globe. It is fair to say this progressive spirit and openness are deeply rooted in Yokohama’s DNA, its genetic constitution.

Prior to the events in autumn, the City of Yokohama is delighted to present an intensive series of mini-tours featuring its new attempts and measures to deliver locally and globally.
