Dr. Hiroko Akiyama, Professor, Institute of Gerontology, University of Tokyo
"Redesigning the whole town, this is a project to study urban development for a long-lived society. We aim to prove by specific data that the elderly can keep in good health by working." (Institute of Gerontology, University of Tokyo Kashiwa Campus, investigates the effects of working on the elderly by health check-ups before and after the beginning of second-life employment.)
"This is the Toyoshikidai housing complex. In this picture, you can see a five-story building without a lift. Looking down from the sky, it is a huge housing complex with 5,000 households. Here is a shopping center."
"About 35% of the residents in the Toyoshikidai housing complex have already reached age 65 or older. It is almost same as the Japanese population’s aging rate in 2030. That’s why this place suits perfectly as our research field."

Second-Life model: Workplaces for elderly people
(1)Vegetable gardening at Kohitsuji-en care home
"I used to have an information systems job related to business machines and computers. It didn’t require physical strength at all so I was always interested in doing something like this after retirement. Now, I quite like doing this job."
(Mr. Nobuyasu Takahashi, 70 years old)
(2)Kurumi Kindergarten
"My philosophy is no retirement in life. I wish to achieve this. If you are physically fit and have a sharp mind, it is a waste just staying at home after retirement."
(Ms. Toshie Kimura, 77 years old)

Dr. Hiroko Akiyama, Professor, Institute of Gerontology, University of Tokyo
"In order to build a sustainable longevity-society, it is necessary to link longevity, health and economy. The most challenging thing would be making a system to circulate these three factors well."
