Fellowship Program: Financial Times Journalist Alex Barker (UK)

post date : 2022.12.05

As part of the 2022-2023 FPCJ Fellowship Program, Mr. Alex Barker, global media editor of the Financial Times (UK), visited Japan from November 13 to 19. The Financial Times was founded in 1888, and along with 125 years of history it is the most influential daily financial newspaper in the world. After having worked as a foreign affairs journalist and as the Brussels bureau chief, Mr. Barker became global media editor in 2019, specializing in writing articles about trends in the global media, entertainment, and advertising industries.

During this fellowship, Mr. Barker covered three topics: The present and future of the media and advertising industries in Japan in the age of digitalization, the present and future of Japan’s entertainment industry, and Japan-UK/Japan-EU relations. He interviewed government officials, experts, and businesspeople in Tokyo.

At the end of the program, Mr. Barker commented, “It was very helpful to be able to hear from government officials and experts who would speak openly on each topic. I was able to hear a lot of opinions on everything from diplomatic policy to conditions in the entertainment industry, which was only possible due to being here in person.”
