As part of the 2022-2023 FPCJ Fellowship Program, Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant’s Foreign Affairs Editor Marije Vlaskamp visited Japan from September 25 to October 3. A quality Dutch newspaper with a circulation of 310,000, de Volkskrant is an influential paper in the Netherlands.

Ms. Vlaskamp covered three topics while in Japan: Japanese foreign policy and security policy, the Japanese economy, and Japan–China relations. She spoke with government officials, experts, and business people in Tokyo, and visited the islands of Ishigaki and Yonaguni.

After her fellowship, Ms. Vlaskamp commented, “I was able to hear a variety of opinions from different government officials and experts on each topic. Actually being able to see what it was like in the southwestern islands also helped make it a very valuable experience.”
