Fellowship Program: Vox Journalist Jen Kirby (US)

post date : 2024.02.20

As part of the 2023-2024 FPCJ Fellowship Program, Ms. Jen Kirby, a senior foreign and national security reporter at Vox, visited Japan from November 12 to 18.

Vox is a new online news media organization founded in 2014 by journalists who previously worked for The Washington Post and other outlets, and has won many awards including News & Documentary Emmy Awards, Online Journalism Awards, and SEAL Environmental Journalism Awards. In addition to articles, they also provide detailed explainers through a variety of mediums including YouTube and podcasts to expand their audience.

Ms. Kirby covered the topics of Japanese defense policies and strengthening alliances during the fellowship, speaking in Tokyo with government officials, a former Japan Self-Defense Force officer, and experts.

At the end of the program, Ms. Kirby commented, “It was very meaningful to come to Japan and hear what people had to say in person. I not only learned more about the topics I covered, but also about Japan in general.”
