Fellowship Program: The Globe and Mail Journalist James Griffith (Canada)

post date : 2023.03.18

As part of the 2022-2023 FPCJ Fellowship Program, Mr. James Griffiths, based out of Hong Kong as the Asia correspondent for The Globe and Mail (Canada), visited Japan from March 6 to 10. The Globe and Mail, with its head office in Toronto, is Canada’s largest English-language daily national newspaper and is considered to be the most influential newspaper in Canada.

Mr. Griffiths covered two topics: Japanese defense policy, and measures to deal with the declining birthrate in Japan. In addition to speaking with government officials and experts in Tokyo, he also visited the town of Nagaizumi, Shizuoka as an example of a local government succeeding in measures to support having children and increasing the birthrate.

After the program ended, Mr. Griffiths commented, “It was very valuable to hear a variety of perspectives from government officials and experts regarding the defense policy. In Nagaizumi, which I visited to cover measures to counter the declining birthrate, I was able to hear directly from members of the local child-raising group, which I believe was the greatest benefit of this fellowship.”
