Video Report: Loneliness and Isolation in Japanese Society and Measures to Respond (Professor Mitsunori Ishida, Contemporary Human Studies, School of Culture, Media and Society, Waseda University )
post date : 2024.12.03
With various social issues related to loneliness and isolation, such as kodokushi (lonely deaths) and hikikomori (shut-ins), becoming more prominent in recent years, the Japanese government enacted the Act on Advancement of Measures to Address Loneliness and Isolation on April 1 this year. With the rapid increase in single seniors and people who remain unmarried their entire lives, family structures and individuals’ connections with society are changing significantly. Viewing loneliness and isolation not as a problem facing individuals, but as an issue for society as a whole, initiatives are being implemented to create a society where people help and support each other.
The FPCJ has invited Dr. Mitsunori Ishida, a professor of Contemporary Human Studies at the Waseda University School of Culture, Media and Society who researches sociology (network theory and human relations theory), to discuss the current state and unique characteristics of social isolation in modern Japanese society, as well as what problems exist and how to deal with them. Dr. Ishida is also a member of the Cabinet Office’s Expert Panel on Measures to Address Loneliness and Isolation.
The briefing was attended by journalists from China, France, Indonesia, Spain, Singapore, UK and US.
