[Report] Annual Seminar for FPCJ Supporting Members

post date : 2022.02.09

With the COVID-19 pandemic still showing no signs of ending as 2022 begins, what is the foreign media interested in reporting on in Japan?

On Tuesday, January 25, the FPCJ held an online seminar for FPCJ supporting members based on the topic “Asking Foreign Correspondents: 2022 News from Japan!”

The panelists for the seminar were Mr. Kim Hyun-Ki, correspondent-at-large and representative of Tokyo bureau for Korea JoongAng Daily and JTBC (TV); Ms. Michiyo Ishida, senior correspondent for Singapore’s CNA (TV); and Mr. Tim Kelly, senior correspondent for the Tokyo bureau of Reuters (From left to right in the image below, followed by Mr. Kazuo Kodama, FPCJ President, as moderator.)

Mr. Kim Hyun-ki, correspondent and Tokyo bureau chief for JoongAng Ilbo and JTBC (TV); Ms. Michiyo Ishida, senior correspondent for Singapore’s CNA (TV); and Mr. Tim Kelly, senior correspondent for the Tokyo bureau of Reuters

All three of them have spent years as correspondents in Japan and have ample media experience. They spoke about what news they were interested this year from a wide range of perspectives, as well as providing advice to the PR representatives participating from FPCJ supporting member companies and local governments.

As news they were interested in for 2022, they mentioned Japan’s entry ban in response to COVID-19 which has been criticized by other countries, and also security topics, in particular the situation surrounding Taiwan. Economics was also mentioned, such as recovery from the damage caused by the pandemic, breaking free from deflation, economic inequality in Japan, and the “new capitalism” being advocated by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.

A question and answer session was held at the end of the seminar, with PR representatives from companies asking for specific advice on approaching members of the foreign media, as well as questions about environmental issues, interest in Japan as a “leading country in facing issues” (kadaisenshinkoku), and approaches taken when reporting.

The FPCJ plans to continue to provide opportunities in the future for supporting members and foreign journalists to interact, in order to support disseminating information from Japan to a foreign audience.
