The Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Association (based in Minato, Tokyo; Chairman Shigeyuki Shinohara) will be holding the Honkaku Shochu and Awamori Cocktail Competition, the first such competition using the “kokushu” (national spirits) of Japan, honkaku shochu and awamori, on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at the Asakusa View Hotel.
The goal of this competition is to use the familiar cocktail to increase awareness of honkaku shochu and awamori among foreigners, with the number of foreign visitors to Japan increasing recently. One of the first places tourists are likely to drink alcohol is at their hotel, so in this competition, 20 members of the Hotel Barman’s Association Japan who have won qualifying rounds at each of the 12 association branches around Japan will be competing based on the taste, appearance, and creativity of the original honkaku shochu and awamori cocktails they have made.
During the awards ceremony and party, in addition to the 20 original cocktails made by the contestants, honkaku shochu and awamori from around Japan will be available to drink, with a light buffet as well. The honkaku shochu and awamori cocktails in this competition will also be available to drink at the bars which the contestants work at.
