Super-Solo Society—Changing Japanese Views on Marriage (Mr. Kazuhisa Arakawa, Hakuhodo Solo Activity Men Research Project Leader)

post date : 2017.06.07

According to a recent report released by the National Institute of Population and Social Security Research, the percentage of men who had never married by age 50 was about 24% (1 in 4), and the percentage for women about 14% (1 in 7), new records for these statistics. With divorces and people whose spouses pass away combined with a rapid drop in interest in marriage, there are estimates that half of the population of Japan will be single in 2035.

The FPCJ has invited Mr. Kazuhisa Arakawa, Solo Activity Men Research Project Leader at Hakuhodo Inc. and author of the book Super-Solo Society: The Shock of the Unmarried Nation, Japan, to discuss the societal structures and the changes in values and consumer trends as Japan becomes one of the first countries to face the issues of a “solo society.”
