Creating an Environment Conducive to Women Working, and Child-Related Policies （Ms. Seiko NODA, Member, House of Representatives）

According to the vital statistics released in February by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the number of births in Japan in 2022 was 799,728, the lowest ever, dropping below 800,000 for the first time since statistics began to be collected in 1899. In March, the Economist released its glass-ceiling index ranking 29 members of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, and Japan ranked second from the bottom. As reasons for this ranking, the magazine noted that women still have a high burden of unpaid labor, such as household chores and raising children, and that they have to choose between a family or a career.
On April 1, the Children and Families Agency will be officially established, handling all policies related to having children and support for raising children. As a central organization to oversee policies related to children, youth, and the declining birthrate, it is hoped that it will reach beyond the boundaries of systems and institutions to provide comprehensive support.
The FPCJ has invited Ms. Seiko NODA, a Member of the House of Representatives who has made policies on children her lifework, to discuss creating an environment in which women can work according to their desires and capabilities, and policies to support both children and parents who are raising children.
