Video report: Increasing US-China Tension and the Future of Japan-China Relations (Dr. Akio Takahara, Professor, The University of Tokyo)

post date : 2021.04.08

Since Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned trip to Japan in April last year was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, relations between Japan and China have stagnated. With China implementing a new coast guard law in February 2021 and concerns over increasingly serious incidents with Chinese government vessels around the Senkaku Islands, the new law has become the target of increasing international criticism, such as when Prime Minister Suga noted how problematic the law was from the perspective of international law during a video conference in March between the leaders of Japan, the US, Australia, and India. The Biden administration in the US is also remaining firm in a hardline stance toward China, with the vicious exchange between the top American and Chinese diplomats on March 18 and 19 showing to the world the severity of this new cold war. What is the future of US-China relations, what impact will they have on the international community, and how should Japan respond?

The FPCJ invited Dr. Akio Takahara, a professor at the University of Tokyo Faculty of Law and expert in Chinese politics and international relations in East Asia, to discuss Japan-China relations now and after the pandemic.

The briefing had a total of 69 participants including journalists from Belgium, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, the UK and the US.
