A Japan-Russia summit meeting was held in Singapore on November 14, followed by talks in Buenos Aires on December 1, and both leaders agreed to accelerate negotiations on a peace treaty based on the 1956 Joint Declaration by Japan and the USSR. Prime Minister Abe plans to visit Russia early next year, there are hopes for progress on a peace treaty and in negotiations regarding the Northern Territories.
The FPCJ invited Mr. Shinji Hyodo, director of the Regional Studies Department of the National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), to speak about the present and future of Japan-Russia relations.
The briefing had a total of 25 participants, including journalists from China, France, UK and US.
