Video report: Is There any Solution to the Pandemic-Accelerated Decline in Birthrate? (Mr. Masashi Kawai, President, The Research Institute of Countermeasures for population Decline)

post date : 2021.09.21

The current pandemic, which still shows no signs of ending, has also had a negative impact on the declining birthrate in Japan. There were 840,832 births in 2020, 24,407 less than in 2019 and the lowest number ever recorded in Japan. If birth numbers continue to decrease at this rate, it will have serious impacts on society as a whole such as a smaller future workforce and the collapse of the social security system.

The FPCJ invited Mr. Masashi Kawai, president of the Research Institute of Countermeasures for Population Decline and an expert on population policy and social security policy, to discuss how to deal with Japan’s declining birthrate, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The briefing was attended  by foreign journalists from France, Germany, Singapore and Russia.
