From Japan straight out to the world: the web site for news and information

Since Prime Minister Suga declared last October that Japan would go carbon neutral by 2050, there has been growing momentum towards decarbonization in Japan. In April 2021, the Japanese government stated that it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 46% of FY 2013 levels by FY 2030, a significant increase from the previous target of a 26% reduction. What must be done to fulfill this ambitious goal and catch up to Europe’s lead, in order to lead the world in decarbonization efforts as the prime minister said Japan would? How can Japan contribute to environmental finance and to a green recovery which will enable the economy to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic while also building a sustainable society?

Ahead of the G7 Summit to be held in Cornwall, England this June, the FPCJ invited international financial analyst Mr. Takejiro Sueyoshi, representative of the Japan Climate Initiative (which has over 650 member organizations within Japan) and special adviser to the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative, to discuss this topic.

The briefing had a total of 37 participants including journalists from China, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia and the US.
