Video Report: Expanding Possibilities for Education with Metaverse Classes (Vice-principal and Metaverse Students, Yushi International High School)

post date : 2025.02.19

According to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s FY2024 School Basic Survey, over 290,000 students were attending correspondence high schools, with the number increasing for the ninth year in a row. This form of schooling in which students can freely choose how frequently they attend and the pace at which they acquire credits is providing new opportunities for learning to students from a variety of backgrounds.

Yushi International High School in Kumamoto Prefecture began a metaverse course in April of last year. The students choose an avatar to their liking and attend some classes in the metaverse (virtual reality), attending school events such as homeroom and the culture festival online, interacting with other students as they learn in a contrast with other correspondence schools that focus on self-study.

The FPCJ has invited Mr. Terunori Sakuraba, vice-principal of Yushi International High School, and discussed the topic of expanding the possibilities of learning through attending correspondence high schools via avatar, spoke about the background of establishing the new metaverse course, its educational characteristics, and how many students have applied this year. Two current students also joined the briefing as their avatars, explained why they chose the course and what their opinion of it is having now experienced it.

The briefing was attended by journalists from Spain, Italy, Singapore Vietnam and Taiwan.
