On January 20, 2025, the Republican Party’s Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 47th president of the United States of America, beginning the second Trump administration. In his inauguration speech, he once again emphasized “America First,” and by signing huge numbers of executive orders on his first day is already quickly implementing significant policy changes from the previous Biden administration. The Japanese government would like to build a strong relationship of trust and cooperation with the Trump administration, further enhancing the Japan-US alliance and cooperating closely on working towards a free and open Indo-Pacific, and so there is significant interest in how the Japanese government will respond to whatever deals are offered by the Trump administration.
The FPCJ has invited Dr. Takayuki Nishiyama, an expert on US politics and comparative politics and a professor at the Seikei University Faculty of Law Department of Political Science, to discuss the second Trump administration and the future of Japan-US relations, including President Trump’s foreign affairs strategy, the impact of the new administration on Japan, and how the Japanese government should prepare.
The briefing was attended by journalists from China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Russia and Taiwan.
