Video Report: Issues and Outlook for Green Transformation in Japan —Decarbonization and Stable Energy Supply in the 7th Strategic Energy Plan(Dr. Sumiko Takeuchi, Member of the Board of Directors and Senior Fellow, International Environment and Economy Institute /Specially Appointed Professor, Tohoku University)
post date : 2024.12.05
The Japanese government has been formulating the 7th Strategic Energy Plan with the goal of it receiving Cabinet approval within the 2024 fiscal year. A major point for this revision will be how much it is geared towards meeting new targets for cutting CO2 emissions (“nationally determined contributions” [NDCs] submitted to the UN under the Paris Agreement). Particular areas of interest are policies for the acquisition of fossil fuels from the perspective of energy security, and for expansion of decarbonization energy sources by restarting nuclear power plants and growing renewable energy.
The FPCJ has invited Dr. Sumiko Takeuchi, Member of the Board of Directors and Senior Fellow at the International Environment and Economy Institute and a Specially Appointed Professor at Tohoku University, who has been involved in UN negotiations regarding climate change for many years and has been a member of multiple government committees such as the Cabinet Office’s Council for Promotion of Regulatory Reform and GX (Green Transformation) Implementation Council, to discuss the issues and outlook for GX in Japan, and whether the 7th Strategic Energy Plan will present a roadmap for succeeding at both decarbonization and a stable energy supply.
The briefing was attended by journalists from France, Germany, and USA.
