With Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s term as president of the Liberal Democratic Party coming to an end, the LDP leadership election will be officially announced on September 12, with voting to take place on September 27. With the incumbent prime minister not joining the race, many LDP Diet members have announced their candidacies, and this leadership election that will essentially determine the next prime minister has been drawing attention both in Japan and overseas.
Just before the leadership election, the FPCJ invited Dr. Yu Uchiyama, a professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and an expert in modern Japanese politics, to discuss the LDP leadership election and the current state of domestic Japanese politics.
The briefing was attended by journalists from China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Korea, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, UK and USA.
