Video Report: Japan and the EU: Recent Developments and Joint Leadership in Challenging Times (H.E. Mr. Jean-Eric PAQUET, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Mr. KODAMA Kazuo, Former Ambassador of Japan to the European Union from 2016-2020 and President of the FPCJ)

post date : 2023.07.19

The close partnership between Japan and the European Union (EU) is said to be based upon the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA), both of which entered into force in 2019. They also share values regarding freedom; respect for human rights; democracy; the rule of law; open, free and fair trade; effective multilateralism and the rules-based international order.

The return of war in Europe, with Russia’s unjustified and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine, as well as major geopolitical shifts represented by China’s rise, are challenging both Europe’s and Japan’s ability to promote their values and defend their interests.

On July 13, the 29th Japan-EU Summit Meeting was held in Brussels. The FPCJ has invited H.E. Mr. Jean-Eric Paquet, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Japan, to a foreign press briefing titled “Japan and the EU: Recent Developments and Joint Leadership in Challenging Times.”

The briefing was attended by journalists from Hong Kong, Russia, US and Japan.
