An Open Letter from Mayors for Peace to all United Nations Member States
This letter encourages all States—especially those possessing nuclear weapons and their allies—to participate actively in the Working Group and to start engaging in constructive deliberations regardless of their political sensibilities. Please read this Open Letter written with our fervent wish to realize a peaceful world free of nuclear weapons.
Mayors for Peace is an international nonpartisan, non-governmental organization with members who profoundly empathize with the spirit of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and strive to establish a world free of nuclear weapons, as well as to realize peace and sustainable development. These aims are based on the responsibility of mayors to protect the safety and welfare of their citizens. Our organization is currently composed of 7,028 member cities from 161 countries and regions, representing over a billion citizens of this earth. And our numbers are growing.
From May 2 to 13, the UN General Assembly’s Open-ended Working Group (OEWG) on nuclear disarmament will hold its second round of substantive meetings at the Palais des Nations, Geneva. Given the significance of this Working Group, Mayors for Peace has issued an Open Letter to all UN member states, as we did for the February session.
It is our hope that the letter can help strengthen momentum in the international community to work together for our common good and facilitate dialogues leading to the elimination of nuclear weapons.
