Is This Abnormal Weather Due to Climate Change? (Dr. Yukiko Imada, Associate Professor, Division of Climate System Research, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, the University of Tokyo)
post date : 2025.08.12
In 2024, for the first time the global average temperature for the year surpassed the target of the Paris Agreement to keep temperature increase within 1.5°C of pre-industrial levels. This summer, temperatures have been reaching record highs throughout Japan, including setting a new record for the highest temperature ever in the country. Extreme weather events such as severe heat, heavy rains, and heavy snow are also occurring frequently worldwide, and there is significant interest in how much of this is due to the impact of climate change.
The FPCJ has invited Dr. Yukiko Imada, an Associate Professor with the University of Tokyo Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute who works on event attribution, scientifically analyzing the relationship between abnormal weather and climate change, to discuss this topic from the perspective of the frontlines of research into how extreme weather events and climate change are related.
Please note that you cannot physically attend this briefing, as it will be a Zoom webinar.
Embassy representatives and FPCJ supporting members may also participate in the briefing as observers (admission free).

■Theme: Is This Abnormal Weather Due to Climate Change?
■Briefer: Dr. Yukiko Imada, Associate Professor, Division of Climate System Research, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, the University of Tokyo
Brief Bio: Received her bachelor's degree in Earth and Planetary Physics from the University of Tokyo and completed her doctoral program in Earth and Planetary Science at the Graduate School of Science, University of Tokyo. After working in the private sector and serving as a researcher at the University of Tokyo and Tokyo Institute of Technology, she became a senior researcher at the Meteorological Research Institute of the Japan Meteorological Agency before assuming her current position. Her area of expertise is climate dynamics, and her research focuses on the mechanisms of climate change and extreme weather events using climate model simulations. She is also engaged in seasonal-to-decadal climate prediction. She has served on various committees of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
