Press Briefing:“Japan’s Challenge: Hyper-aged Society”
Dr. Hiroko Akiyama, Professor, Institute of Gerontology, University of Tokyo
In its special report titled “Into the unknown,” The Economist in November 2010 featured Japan’s aging, arguing “Japan is ageing faster than any country in history, with vast consequences for its economy and society.” It is estimated that the elderly will account for one-third of Japan’s population in 2030. Will the county succeed in creating a new value and social system, and showing the way to a high-aged society as the world’s pioneer?
A widely recognized expert on aging issues in Japan, Dr. Hiroko Akiyama, Professor, Tokyo University Institute of Gerontology, will come to FPCJ to answer the question. She will tell you about her studies including the results of her institute’s social experiment project “Redesigning communities for an aged society,” and extend her views on challenges and opportunities for the future.
