Abenomics and Outlook for the Japanese Economy
Briefer: Prof. Takatoshi Ito, Graduate School of Economics, The University of Tokyo
In September we have seen good news for Japan's economy: It was decided that the 2020 summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo; the Gross Domestic Product for the April-June period was revised upward; and land prices in metropolitan areas rose for the first time in five years. On October 1, Prime Minister Abe announced that the sales tax would be raised in April next year. In addition to a corporate tax reduction of up to one trillion yen to boost capital investment and wage hikes, the government has decided to formulate economic measures of up to five trillion yen in early December, in preparation for the sales tax hike. It has also decided to study the abolition of a special corporate tax for disaster reconstruction one year early so that it will come to a conclusion within December.
Now that we have all the materials for the outlook of the Japanese economy, FPCJ has invited Dr. Takatoshi Ito, Professor of the Graduate School of Economics and Dean of the Graduate School of Public Policy, University of Tokyo, to discuss the outlook of Abe’s policy package and its impact on the economy in the medium term.
We look forward to your attendance.
