Outlook for Politics in 2025: The Future of Political Parties(Dr. Yuri Kono, Professor, Department of Political Science, Faculty of Law, Hosei University )
post date : 2025.01.21
In the House of Representatives election held in October last year, the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito failed to win a majority of seats combined, leading to the birth of the first minority government Cabinet in approximately 30 years for the Ishiba administration. The minority government is expected to face difficulties in the upcoming regular Diet session beginning on January 24. With the House of Councillors and Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly to hold elections this summer, major extensions to the Diet session are unlikely, and all eyes are on how the government will handle passing legislation such as the budget for the new fiscal year and tax reforms. 100 years after the start of the Showa era, 80 years after the end of World War II, and 70 years after the formation of the Liberal Democratic Party, what is the outlook for domestic Japanese politics this year?
The FPCJ has invited Dr. Yuri Kono, an expert in the history of Japanese political thought who frequently appears in the media and a professor at the Hosei University Faculty of Law Department of Political Science, to discuss the outlook for politics in 2025, the future of political parties, and trends in domestic Japanese politics this year.
Please note that you cannot physically attend this briefing, as it will be a Zoom webinar.
Embassy representatives and FPCJ supporting members may also participate in the briefing as observers (admission free).
