2024 UN Summit of the Future—Hopes for Japan (Dr. Norichika Kanie, Professor, Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, Graduate School of Media and Governance, Keio University)

post date : 2024.09.06

The UN Summit of the Future will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York on September 22 and 23, 2024. World leaders will meet to discuss increasing international cooperation to respond to major issues the world is facing as we move towards 2045, the 100th anniversary of the UN’s establishment, as well as discussing the next global agenda to follow the SDGs. Minister of Foreign Affairs Yoko Kamikawa participated in the Summit of the Future preparatory ministerial meeting held in September last year, and indicated Japan’s intent to actively contribute to the summit while emphasizing the importance of strengthening multilateralism in light of serious, complex issues. In April this year, proposals from the public for the UN Summit of the Future were presented to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a meeting to discuss the proposals was also held in June.

Ahead of the Summit of the Future, the FPCJ has invited Dr. Norichika Kanie, a professor at the Keio University Graduate School of Media and Governance who is an expert in international relations and sustainability and a member of multiple government committees mainly related to the SDGs, to discuss key points to watch for at the summit, as well as Japan’s initiatives, positions, and desired results.
