Japan’s Foreign and Security Policy in Light of US-China Tensions（Dr. Ryo Sahashi, Associate Professor of International Politics, Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, The University of Tokyo）

The G7 Hiroshima Summit held in May showed the way to ending growing global division and repairing the international order. The G7 Hiroshima Leaders' Communiqué stressed that the G7 would be more united than ever, and clearly stated they would reinforce “the free and open international order based on the rule of law.” Regarding China, the communiqué included mention of serious concerns over the situation in the East and South China Seas, and opposition to any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force. The document also reaffirmed the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and called for a peaceful resolution of issues. Geopolitically, it is located between the US and China, with a heavy reliance on the US for security issues and on China when it comes to the economy, how will Japan contribute to repairing the international order for peace and stability in the global community?
The FPCJ has invited Dr. Ryo Sahashi, Associate Professor of International Politics, Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, The University of Tokyo and specialist in international politics, particularly US-China relations and international relations in East Asia, to discuss what Japan’s foreign and security policy will be in light of current US-China tensions.
