post date : 2013.08.20

Krister Kivi, a journalist from Eesti Ekspress, a weekly newspaper in Estonia, visited Japan to cover the situation of the disaster-stricken areas two months after the disaster. Established in 1989, Eesti Ekspress is the first independent newspaper in Estonia, a country with a 1.34 million population. The newspaper has a circulation of about 32,000 and the estimated number of readers is over 100,000.

The Foreign Press Center/Japan arranged interviews with officials in charge of disaster management in Miyagi Prefecture and Sendai City, and a press official at the Tokyo Electric Power Company. The journalist covered such issues as the challenges each local government is facing, assistance for the afflicted people, recovery of the infrastructure, and measures against future tsunami. A six-page feature article based on his visit to Japan was published on June 2.
