Fellowship Program: POLITICO Europe Journalist Emilio Casalicchio (UK)

post date : 2024.05.16

As part of the 2023-2024 FPCJ Fellowship Program, Mr. Emilio Casalicchio, a reporter with the UK bureau of POLITICO Europe, visited Japan from December 3 to 9.

POLITICO Europe is a European edition of the US political news media POLITICO, covering politics, public policy, finance, and domestic and international news within Europe. According to the BCW Brussels and Savanta ComRes EU Media Poll 2023, it is the most influential news source for opinion leaders in the EU.

While in Japan, Mr. Casalicchio covered Japan’s diplomacy and security, aging society, and railroads, speaking with government officials and experts. He also visited Camp Kengun in Kumamoto Prefecture to cover the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force’s Western Army, which is responsible for the defense of Kyushu and Okinawa.

After the program, Mr. Casalicchio commented that being able to hear from people with a deep knowledge of the different topics was very useful for understanding the background, and that the fellowship was a valuable opportunity to interview people who were normally difficult to gain access to, such as government officials.
