In early April, the Diet approved a basic plan for the ceremonies related to the abdication of the current emperor and enthronement of the new emperor. The current emperor will abdicate next year on April 30, 2019, followed by the crown prince being enthroned as the new emperor the next day on May 1.
The details of the basic plan are expected to be confirmed this fall at the earliest. The FPCJ invited Dr. Eiichi Miyashiro, Senior Staff Writer at the Asahi Shimbun and an expert on history, to speak about the role and meaning of each ceremony. Mr. Miyashiro writes articles on topics including history, Cultural Properties, and archeology.
The briefing had a total of 35 participants, including 18 journalists from China, France, Germany, and USA, and 15 embassy representatives.
