The tenth regular session of the Northern Committee (NC 10) of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC), discussing management of Pacific bluefin tuna (PBF) with critically low stock levels, closed on September 4. It adopted a recommendation of a CMM for the management of PBF based on a Japanese proposal to reduce all catches of PBF less than 30 kg to 50% of 2002-2004 annual average levels.
The FPCJ has invited Japanese WCPFC Commissioner Mr. Hisashi Endo, the Chief Counsellor of Fisheries Agency and NC chairman Mr. Masanori Miyahara, advisor to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, to discuss Japanese initiatives and leadership in tuna resource management.
