Since 1997, Japan has held the Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM) every three years to strengthen relationships with Pacific island countries, and the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) will be held in Tokyo this July. Topics planned for this year’s meeting include responses to shared issues such as climate change and marine issues, collaboration in training human resources, and maintaining a free and open international order.
The FPCJ invited Dr. Izumi Kobayashi, President of the Japan Pacific Islands Association and Professor at Osaka Gakuin University to discuss the role PALM has played in promoting Japanese diplomacy with Pacific island countries, how Japan and Pacific island countries are attempting to deal with the shared issues they are facing and will discuss at PALM10, and what results he hopes to see from PALM10.
The briefing was attended by journalists from Brazil, China, France, Papua New Guinea, and USA.
