Video Report: Rebuilding an International Order Based on the Rule of Law(Professor Nobukatsu Kanehara, Doshisha University, Faculty of Law)

post date : 2023.05.10

With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and increasing tensions between the US and China regarding Taiwan, the international community is facing a crisis which could shake the foundations of the postwar international order. This situation has led to a renewed appreciation for the importance of the international community sharing unusual values based on the rule of law, and working together for global peace and prosperity. On March 20, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made a policy speech while in India in which he announced “Japan’s New Plan for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific,” consisting of the four pillars of “principles for peace and rules for prosperity,” “addressing challenges in an Indo-Pacific way,” “multi-layered connectivity,” and “extending efforts for security and safe use of the sea to the air.” With Japan holding the G7 presidency this year and serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for two years from January 2023, there is significant interest both domestically and internationally in what role Japan will play.

The FPCJ has invited Doshisha University, Faculty of Law, professor Mr. Nobukatsu Kanehara, who previously held positions including Assistant Chief Cabinet Secretary and Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Secretariat, to discuss the challenges and outlook for rebuilding an international order based on the rule of law, including Japan’s new plan for a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.

The briefing was attended by journalists from US, UK, Singapore, Brazil.
