Video report: Reconstruction Minister Discusses Reconstruction from the Great East Japan Earthquake after Nine Years

post date : 2020.02.18

Nearly nine years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake. Although the number of evacuees has fallen to approximately 10% of what it was immediately after the earthquake, there are still almost 50,000 people living as evacuees. Shipments of manufactured goods from the three prefectures affected by the disaster have generally recovered, but recovery of sales in the marine product processing industry is still an issue.

Against this backdrop, 2020, as the year of the Olympics, will see the Olympic torch relay for the “Recovery Olympics” start on March 26 from J-Village in Fukushima Prefecture. With Olympic events being held in the disaster-affected areas as well, there are hopes it will help promote tourism and eliminate negative reputations.

Near the end of last year, the decision was made to extend the Reconstruction Agency’s mission for another ten years, and the FPCJ invited Mr. Tanaka Kazunori, Minister for Reconstruction, to discuss the state of the disaster-affected areas, the future course for reconstruction, and the Recovery Olympics.

The briefing had a total of 18 participants including journalists from China, France,Germany, Singapore, the USA, and Vietnam.
