Fellowship Program: The Age Journalist David King (Australia)
As part of the 2025-2026 FPCJ Fellowship Program, Mr. David King, national editor of The Age, visited Japan from June 1 to June 7, 2025.
Owned by Nine, a major Australian media company, The Age is the most widely read newspaper in the state of Victoria (which Melbourne is the capital of), and is known as one of the newspapers of record for Australia as a whole.
While in Japan, Mr. King covered three topics: the Mogami-class frigate, training in Australia by the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, and the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In Tokyo, he interviewed officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, as well as several experts. He also visited Nagasaki Prefecture, where he covered the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade at Camp Ainoura in Sasebo, and spoke with Ms. Miyako Jodai, a hibakusha (atomic bomb survivor).
After the program, Mr. King remarked that he was very satisfied, as he was able to cover the topics he wanted to in depth. In particular, he felt that his interviews with two Japan Self-Defense Force senior officers and a hibakusha were extremely valuable.
