Tottori Prefectural Museum of Art
Prefectural Museum of Art opens on Mar. 30 in Tottori, the prefecture with the lowest population in Japan (Jakuchu, Warhol, Richter, and more will be displayed in Opening Commemorative Exhibition “Art of the Real” until Jun.15)
2025.03.28
Overview
•Tottori Prefecture lies between the Sea of Japan and the Chugoku Mountains, an 80 minute flight from Tokyo and a few hours train ride from Osaka or Kyoto. Surrounded by beautiful nature, it is the prefecture with the lowest population in Japan
•Until now, there was no prefectural art museum in Tottori Prefecture. With the art department of the Tottori Prefectural Museum becoming independent, the new Tottori Prefectural Museum of Art will open.
•The museum was designed by Maki and Associates, which was led by world-famous architect Fumihiko Maki. It looks out over the grassy expanse of the Omido Temple Ruins, and is unique in its wide-open spaces full of sunlight, unusual for an art museum.
•The museum’s collection is based around pieces by artists with connections to Tottori Prefecture and pieces by artists with connections to those artists, including fabulous pieces of art from Japan and abroad, as well as modern art. In 2022, Andy Warhol’s famous Brillo Boxes was added to the collection.

Opening Commemorative Exhibition
Art of the Real: Transcendent Expression—from Jakuchu to Warhol and Richter
•The opening commemorative exhibition Art of the Real: Transcendent Expression—from Jakuchu to Warhol and Richter, beginning on Sunday, March 30, draws on aspects of the museum’s collection, with its distinctive breadth from the Edo period to the present and from Japan to the world, to bring together under one roof around 180 masterpieces representing each era, starting with Jakuchu. You can see, from a variety of perspectives, attempts to tackle a significant theme in art since time immemorial—the question of “What is real?”
