Sakai will host an event on September 25th where visitors can enjoy the world of Alphonse Mucha, beautifully enhanced by traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Sakai, located in the southern part of Osaka with convenient access from Kansai International Airport and Shin-Osaka Station, is the birthplace of Sen no Rikyu, who perfected the tea ceremony. It is also home to Osaka’s first World Heritage Site, the stunning Mozu Tombs, as well as tranquil historical shrines, temples, and cityscapes. Sakai is also renowned for its traditional craftsmanship, including Sakai knives beloved by chefs around the world. It is a cultural city where visitors can experience the beauty and aesthetics of Japan.
On September 25th, 2025, Sakai City will host an event “Re-Discover JAPAN’s Beauty in Sakai, Osaka” at the Expo 2025’s “Osaka Healthcare Pavilion -reborn stage-“. It is in accordance with the Expo 2025 theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” showcasing the appeals of Sakai, including Japanese craftmanship. We will offer experiences to rediscover the essence and origins of Japan’s beauty at the Expo 2025 venue.
■”Craftsmanship Journey – The world of Mucha, woven by Sakai’s artisans
As a historical trading hub, Sakai has long flourished through cultural exchange, giving birth to diverse traditions. Through interactive experiences such as cultural workshops and exchanges with artisans, visitors can enjoy the timeless spirit of Japanese tradition that thrives in Sakai free of charge.
<Venue highlights>
1) Traditional Japanese culture will be showcased through interactive demonstrations and workshops, featuring Sakai incense (praised as an art of fragrance), Sakai forged knives (cherished by chefs worldwide), traditional hand dyeing techniques, Sakai Gogatsu Koinobori (Osaka’s only hand-painted carp streamers), the tea ceremony perfected by Sen no Rikyu, and traditional Japanese sweets.
2) Exhibition of works by artisans from Sakai, featuring traditional hand-dyed cotton cloths and Sakai dantsu (handwoven carpets), as well as chokin (metal engraving) pieces, all inspired by Mucha’s original artworks.
3) Display of Mucha’s works and live music performances that evoke his artistic world, along with a photo spot surrounded by floral arrangements inspired by his art.
4) Cultural exchange stage program with the official participating country, the Czech Republic, through the tradition of tea.
5) Interactive stage program led by Ms. Sachiko Nakajima, producer of “Playground of Life: Jellyfish Pavilion”, featuring the KURAGE Band and musical instruments upcycled from scrap materials generated in local manufacturing processes.
6) Showcase and sales of locally crafted products from Sakai.
