Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO)

TV Feature Showcases Disaster-Hit Noto Peninsula’s New Tourism Potential

2025.07.02

The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) recently sponsored a special television feature in English on the Noto Peninsula. Titled "Post-Disaster Noto Welcomes Back Visitors," this segment aired worldwide courtesy of NHK WORLD-JAPAN/jibtv on May 30 as the first part of the English-language program Catch Japan, and is currently available to view on demand at the following URL: https://tinyurl.com/46pc7bee

Please take this opportunity to get a sense of contemporary Noto, and to listen to local voices of determination and optimism. If you, or the media organizations you work with, would like to cover the area, please contact Noto DMC's Koyama Hajime (koyama@noto-dmc.com), who can provide the necessary introductions.

The Noto Peninsula is currently battling back from two major natural disasters in 2024. The area was rocked by a devastating earthquake on New Year’s Day, then battered again in September by torrential rain and flooding. Despite the destruction, the local community has responded with courage and resourcefulness.

The Catch Japan segment takes viewers to Wajima, a scenic coastal city known for its exquisite lacquerware, a lively morning market, and tasty local delicacies. Each of the people and places featured offers insights into the community's resilience, grounded in a close connection to nature and pride in local identity. The segment also points to the emergence of new tourism services and reveals genuine enthusiasm to welcome more foreign visitors.

The segment's director, Adam Fulford, says: "The people we met in the Noto Peninsula were both welcoming and informative. They spoke frankly about the disaster and conveyed an unshakable commitment to building a better future. Visiting Wajima opened my eyes to various aspects of the reality of life in a battling regional community. If international journalists in Japan have a chance to visit the Noto Peninsula, I am sure they too will find many opportunities to generate valuable reports and stories."
