1. Purpose
FMU’s Radiation Medical Science Center for the Fukushima Health Management Survey (hereinafter, "the Center") invites you to join us for "3.11: Sharing lessons of Fukushima with Japan and the world," a symposium for domestic and international participants to share findings from the Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS), to advance scientific knowledge by discussing survey results with local and global experts, and to utilize the results to maintain and improve the health of prefectural residents.
*What is “The Fukushima Health Management Survey (FHMS)”?
The FHMS is a health survey that Fukushima Prefecture has commissioned Fukushima Medical University to conduct since 2011. Its purpose is to assess prefectural residents' exposure doses following the release of radioactive materials and their evacuation after the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, as well as to ascertain the health status of residents in general, for disease prevention, early detection, early treatment, and to maintain and promote the health of prefectural residents into the future.
The Survey consists of a Basic Survey to estimate external radiation doses during the period when air doses were highest, and four detailed surveys: Thyroid Ultrasound Examination (TUE), Comprehensive Health Check(CHC), Mental Health and Lifestyle Survey (KOKOKARA CHOUSA), and Pregnancy and Birth Survey(PBS).
2. Outline
This year, our sixth symposium will be held for the first time with the main venue in Tokyo, a satellite venue in Fukushima, and online, so that people all over the world can understand the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, and the current state of revitalization through the results of the the FHMS and other information.
10 experts from Japan and overseas will give presentations. The first half of the program will introduce the latest scientific findings obtained through 12 years of the FHMS. In the second half, we will present and discuss our current research and activities from the viewpoint of how to utilize the findings in the future, with an eye toward future prospects, to help preparing for possible emergency situations that may occur elsewhere.
In the Introduction, Dr. YASUMURA Seiji, Executive Director of the Center, will open the symposium with his "Overview of the Fukushima Health Management Survey,” covering the Basic Survey and 4 detailed surveys of the FHMS.
In Session 1, "Insights – what we have learned from the people of Fukushima," FMU faculty members will share what we’ve accomplished through the Survey after the Disaster, and present the latest findings in detail.
In Session 2, "Bridges – to the future, for the people” Dr. UCHIYAMA Tokio (Vice President, Fukushima College) will introduce efforts to clarify how catastophic disaster effects children’s mental health, including issues related to infant development. Mr. KATAHIRA Yoshinori (Director and Secretary General, Fukushima Collabolative Revitalization Center) will introduce efforts and activities to support wide area evacuees with their changing needs over time, followed by FMU’s Dr. TAMAKI Tomoaki introducing post disaster risk communication and the support activies for nuclear accident-affected municipalities.
In her Keynote Lecture, Dr. May ABDEL-WAHAB (Director, Division of Human Health, Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, International Atomic Energy Agency) will address current knowledge about radiation and human health .
This symposium has nominal support from Fukushima Prefecture, the Ministry of the Environment, and other related ministries, organizations, and research institutes in and outside the prefecture.

5. Intended audience
The symposium is open to everyone. For example, residents of Fukushima Prefecture and evacuees from disaster affected area, health care workers, students, and administrative officers of areas where nuclear power plants are located.
