“YOKOHAMA 2005: International Triennale of Contemporary Art” (Press Preview on September 27)

The City of Yokohama and the Organizing Committee for the Yokohama Triennale are delighted to announce that YOKOHAMA 2005: International Triennale of Contemporary Art will launch on September 28 and run through December 18. Following the success of YOKOHAMA 2001 held in Minato Mirai 21, this Second Yokohama Triennale will feature 71 projects by 86 participating artists from 30 countries and regions. Its main venues are two enormous warehouses, No. 3 and No. 4 Uwaya on Yamashita Pier, located next to Yamashita Park where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Port of Yokohama with the landmark, Yokohama Bay Bridge.

The exhibition is entitled “Art Circus [Jumping from the Ordinary].“ Like a circus, a myriad of happenings leap out onto the stage in quick succession, coming together in front of the audience to offer a wide range of experiences. It is trying to go beyond a conventional exhibition in which visitors simply observe the works on display, and to remove the barriers between artists and art lovers to create a place for both of them to be involved in the creative process. The special emphasis of the theme is “involvement on-site”. Through arrangements for public viewing of the creation of particular works, workshops, home-stay production by artists, and other approaches, the Triennale seeks to create a fresh space for people to encounter art.

In addition to the exhibits, the program is packed with interactive events including art performances, plays, films, symposiums, and gallery talks by the artists. Prior to the opening, the Organizing Committee for the Yokohama Triennale cordially invites the members of foreign media in Tokyo to a press preview with guided tour on September 27. Mr. Tadashi Kawamata, artistic director of the exhibition, will conduct the guided tour three times on the day: from 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00. English assistance will be available for the tour starting at 13:00. (The venue is open from 10:00 through 17:30 for a preview.)

The City of Yokohama has organized a press tour for the Preview. In this press tour, participants will take part in the Mr. Kawamata’s guided tour hearing his views on the theme and works of Yokohama 2005 and also freely talk to more than 70 participating artists presented during the Preview.
