Over nine months have passed since the beginning of the second Trump administration. In response to the President's successive statements regarding the Japan-US security treaty , there are concerns about the future of the alliance between the two countries. The Japan-US alliance, which formed the basis for Japan’s security policy since World War II, has reached a new turning point.

The FPCJ has invited Dr. Yasuaki Chijiwa, chief of the International Conflict Division of the Center for Military History of the National Institute for Defense Studies, to discuss the topic “Will the US Defend Japan? The History of and Outlook for the Japan-US Alliance.” He will speak from a historical perspective on the formation and changes to the Japan-US security structure from the postwar period to the present, the current state of the Japan-US alliance as it changes under the second Trump administration, and what direction should be taken going forward for Japan’s security policy.
