80th Anniversary of the UN: Challenges for Disarmament and Japan’s Role (Ms Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, United Nations)

With this year marking the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations, the FPCJ has invited Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, to discuss the issues surrounding disarmament and what role Japan should play.

This will be a hybrid briefing, with participation in person possible at the FPCJ Conference Room, in addition to an online livestream via Zoom webinar.

■Briefer: Ms Izumi Nakamitsu, Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, United Nations
Brief Bio: Izumi Nakamitsu has served as UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs since May 2017. She has held senior roles in UN peacekeeping, crisis response, and refugee affairs, and was a professor at Hitotsubashi University. She holds degrees from Waseda and Georgetown Universities and has worked extensively in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

As in our standard press briefings, there will be a Q&A session at the end. In-person participants at the FPCJ conference room will be given priority for asking questions.
