Outlook for the 27th House of Councillors Election and the Future of Japanese Domestic Politics (Dr. Yu Uchiyama, Professor, University of Tokyo Graduate School of Arts and Sciences)

post date : 2025.06.24

Official campaigning for the 27th House of Councillors election is expected to begin on July 3, with voting on July 20. With issues such as money in politics and the impact of high prices, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is expected to struggle in this election. With the LDP and Komeito forming a minority government in the House of Representatives, a focal point of this election will be whether they can maintain a majority in the House of Councillors, and Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s leadership will be put to the test.

Four days before the House of Councillors election, the FPCJ has invited Dr. Yu Uchiyama, an expert in modern Japanese politics and a professor at the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, to discuss the outlook for the election and key areas to watch in domestic Japanese politics going forward.

Please note that you cannot physically attend this briefing, as it will be a Zoom webinar.

Embassy representatives and FPCJ supporting members may also participate in the briefing as observers (admission free).
