On December 5 in Asunción, Paraguay, at the 19th session of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, the decision was officially made to add traditional sake making to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
The FPCJ has invited Mr. Shuso Imada, General Manager of the Japan Sake and Shochu Information Center (operated by the Japan Sake and Shochu Makers Cooperation), as well as Mr. Tatsuya Ishikawa, the head brewer for Tsukinoi Sake Brewery (located in Oarai, Ibaraki) and Vice-chair of the Preservation Society of Japanese Koji-based Sake Making Craftmanship, to discuss traditional sake making being added to the Intangible Culture list and how to protect and pass on this traditional culture to the next generation. They will discuss hopes for increased demand due to being included in the list, initiatives to promote the appeal of Japanese sake domestically and internationally, the methods and unique characteristics of traditional sake making using koji mold, and initiatives for passing on the craftsmanship and spirit of sake making to future generations.
Please note that you cannot physically attend this briefing, as it will be a Zoom webinar.
